The myth that old dogs cannot learn new tricks has cost a lot of families years of easier living. In practice, adult dogs often learn faster than puppies because they can hold their attention for more than eleven seconds.

What changes with an older dog is the amount of history in the room. A six-year habit has been rehearsed thousands of times, so we are not teaching from blank paper — we are competing with a well-worn path. That takes consistency, not force.
